What is a Calyx?

Is it an SSC? A Buckle Tai?
When I think of SSC, I have a particular type of carrier in mind. The Ergo baby carrier was probably the first of this type. It has a Mei Tai-like body, with backpack straps, and a firm closed-cell waistband usually 4 or 5 inches wide which is worn below the body of the carrier, at the wearer’s hips. A Buckle Tai is a Mei Tai with buckles. Little to no padding in the waist, worn “apron-style,” very simple. Usually worn higher on the back, like a Mei Tai. (There are other carriers that predated these styles, or have broken the mold completely – the Baby Trekker, Baby Bjorn, and the Pikkolo, for example, are unlike either of these styles…but I digress)

So, a Calyx. Which one is it? It has a padded waist which has some portion of the padded part below the body, so is it an SSC? But, the harness flaps up like a Mei Tai with a padded waistbelt worn apron-style. When when you wear it down low on your hips, the baby seems to low and the fit is all strange, but it feels great in a high back carry. So…is it a buckle tai? I think a Calyx is somewhere in between, let me tell you what I mean.

Waterbirth International Needs Our Help!

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Both of my children were born in water; I cannot fathom doing it any other way. The warm, enveloping water buoyed my body and helped me feel protected as I brought my children into the world. Waterbirth International is a not-for-profit organization who’s mission statement reads “We ensure that waterbirth is an available option for all women.” I fully support this work, and that is why I was so dismayed this morning to open an email from the director Barbara Harper, and read about the trouble they are having:

For twenty plus years WBI and Barbara Harper have been guiding mothers and their providers, providing education and birth pools all over the world. Waterbirth International is facing the very difficult truth that the Gentle Birth World Congress – a fabulous success in every way for international and local attendees – drained all of our resources. We may have to close the doors permanently by January 31st.
We need to raise $200,000 in donations to cover the debts from the Congress.

With such a large sum to raise, we need each of you to support this cause. When you support waterbirth, you are making a statement that you want and need options, choices and more control.

Mama By Design participated in the Baby Expo associated with the Gentle Birth World Congress. It was truly a beautiful event. We are hoping to find a way to assist in raising funds for Waterbirth International, as it is critically important that this organization stay active and able to serve birthing women. I am considering a couple of options, including a small run of waterbirth themed embroidered panel Calyx carriers. In the meantime, check out Barbara Harper’s excellent book Gentle Birth Choices, available from Waterbirth International’s store.

A Calyx Special Just For Dad…

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Peter and Hannah Any Babywearing Dad will tell you how much positive attention they get from the Mamas when they wear their little one on their back, and the Calyx is a carrier Dad can feel good about wearing.

We’ve chosen some manly fabrics with Dad in mind, like the Tsume (“Claw”) with dragons and tigers, Rainbow Trout for fishermen and Cygnet with quiet, neutral colors. These carriers are on sale for $129.00 through Sunday Jan. 13. We’ve thrown in Coriander as well, though it’s a little more exciting, because some Dads want a little bit of color.

So Mama doesn’t feel left out, all of our girlier carriers, Satsuke, Ginger, and Sedge, ship for free. If one of these is your Dh’s favorite, I’ll rebate the difference if you send me a picture of him wearing it out in public. ;)

Only One!

Update: This carrier has a new home. :)

Limited Edition Calyx

I have only made 4 carriers with this fabric option, as a special order (yes, I will take them…be patient for another couple weeks while I sort out the details. When I’m ready to talk Customs, I’ll post about it). The mama who asked for the fabric graciously allowed me to make a few extra, 2 of which have gone quietly. This is the only one left. It is first come, first served. I don’t want to add a paypal button because they can’t keep track of inventory, so there are 2 choices: Either email me at support@mamabydesign.com, or if you know you want a Calyx and have a second choice please go through the order page choosing your second choice as your first and putting “First Choice: Limited Edition!” in the message field. Either way it will come through my inbox, and I’ll use the time stamp to determine who gets lucky.
