Who made your Calyx?
Thursday, February 5th, 2009I thought it would be fun to introduce everyone to the folks who actually produce the Calyx. T&J Custom Sewing and Design is a small, owner-operated shop in Springfield, OR. They have, combined, over 50 years of experience in commercial sewn product production. In addition to sewing for MBD, they produce a number of products for other companies including cloth diapers, bibs, aprons and blankets, and the have also sewn for larger companies such as Burley, Paul Mitchell, and Boeing.
The shop itself is clean and airy, with natural sunlight pouring through the windows and music playing on the radio. T&J stands for Terry and Julie. Here is Julie, working on a Calyx:
There are a row of shelves along the wall, with cut pieces ready to be sewn. Do they look familiar?
They have a lot of fun equipment in the shop. Industrial sewing machines and sergers, and also webbing cutters and hydraulic snap presses. Here is Terry, setting a snap:
And some more fun machines:
Especially in these uncertain economic times, I am very proud that my little business helps to support other local, family owned businesses. Not only is it important to keep people in our local community employed, it is vital that the skills necessary to design and make the things that we need stay alive in our community as well. Thank you for supporting MBD, and Terry and Julie too.
Calyx on Celebrity Baby Blog!
Thursday, January 8th, 2009Calyx Baby Carrier: Designed by a Mama… Obviously!
I wear my daughter a lot. Almost all the time, really. And the Calyx Baby Carrier by Mama Design ($129) has been a favorite around my house since it arrived. Capable of holding children 4-months-old right through to toddlerhood, it’s a wonderful go-everywhere carrier option.
A Note on the Strap Length Sale
Thursday, February 28th, 2008Here is the sizing information that I gave in the previous post. There seems to have been some confusion, people with smaller bodies ordering from the Clearance Sale and then having fit issues. Folks, if you are smaller that 5′4″ average weight, you are probably going to have a problem. I suggested below that those who are 5′6″ and over are the ones who could confidently take advantage of this sale. I know the price is good, but please be patient. If you are smaller, please wait for a Calyx that will fit you.
I am marking down all of the Original Size Calyx carriers that I currently have in stock right now. They will stay marked down until they are gone. I want to stress that there is nothing wrong with this size. In fact, mamas around 5′6″ and up, who are chewy but not necessarily fluffy, or who are carrying toddlers and need to wear the Calyx a little lower will probably prefer this strap length because the padded portion of the strap is long enough to ensure that the little one’s leg is covered. This is the size I would want, at 5′6″, about 150 lbs, with a tall skinny 3 yo.
A Gallery For You!
Wednesday, February 6th, 2008I just created a gallery of action shots sent in by happy Calyx users. If you’d like to add a picture, just email it to me.
This Calyx took a trip to the Children’s Museum last weekend. Don’t they look great? This is the current Calyx size, you can see that mom is of a slender average size, and still has some adjusting room left in the strap.
When you’re considering whether one might work for you, remember that the Calyx was created to be a comfortable big baby and toddler carrier. If it seems roomy with your 3 month old, that’s because it’s made to fit best when she’s 9 months up to at least 3 years. It can be used with babies in the 4-6 month range, but there are more appropriate newborn and small baby carrier styles on the market.
Only One!
Sunday, January 6th, 2008Update: This carrier has a new home.
I have only made 4 carriers with this fabric option, as a special order (yes, I will take them…be patient for another couple weeks while I sort out the details. When I’m ready to talk Customs, I’ll post about it). The mama who asked for the fabric graciously allowed me to make a few extra, 2 of which have gone quietly. This is the only one left. It is first come, first served. I don’t want to add a paypal button because they can’t keep track of inventory, so there are 2 choices: Either email me at support@mamabydesign.com, or if you know you want a Calyx and have a second choice please go through the order page choosing your second choice as your first and putting “First Choice: Limited Edition!” in the message field. Either way it will come through my inbox, and I’ll use the time stamp to determine who gets lucky.
